The Hearing Center is equipped to provide Otoacoustic Emissions
(OAE) testing. OAE testing enables the audiologist to test infants,
toddlers and other individuals with questionable pure tone results.
A small probe that contains a microphone and speaker is placed
into the patient’s ear canal, and sounds are presented. If
there is an emission present for those sounds that are critical
to speech comprehension, then the patient has "passed."
This test cannot measure how much hearing loss is present; but it
can tell if the cochlea is responding normally or not.
